ATMIS PR/19/2023

Mogadishu, 4 December 2023: The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) welcomes the unanimous adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2714 (2023), which lifts the arms embargo imposed on the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).

This historic decision marks a significant turning point in Somalia’s security development and will expedite the ongoing security transition from ATMIS to the Somali Security Forces (SSF). ATMIS particularly extends its heartfelt congratulations to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, commending his leadership and steadfast commitment in realizing this significant milestone.

Lifting the arms embargo is a key step in bolstering the operational capabilities of the SSF. It empowers them to take more assertive actions against Al-Shabaab and other security threats to defend Somalia’s sovereignty.

ATMIS reaffirms its dedication to assisting Somalia on its journey towards lasting peace and stability. ATMIS remains committed to continuing our close collaboration with the FGS and the Somali Security Forces, to building a secure and prosperous future for Somalia.
