AU officials visit recuperating ATMIS soldiers in Nairobi

NAIROBI, 8 October 2022 – High level officials from the African Union Headquarters and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) on Friday visited injured ATMIS soldiers recuperating across various hospitals in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.

The soldiers are recovering from various injuries suffered during combat activities in support of the fight against terrorism led by the Somali National Army (SNA) and security forces.

ATMIS, in collaboration with its partners usually evacuates critically injured soldiers to Nairobi for specialised medical care and treatment.

ATMIS Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (DSRCC), Ms. Fiona Lortan delivered a message of hope and goodwill to the recovering soldiers.

“We acknowledge the sacrifices that they make and thank them for their contributions. We are here to check up on their recovery and wellbeing and wish them speedy recovery.   We are also grateful to their governments for deploying them.,” said Ms. Lortan.

ATMIS Medical Planning Officer, Dr. Komlan Moreira, expressed satisfaction with the quality of treatment and care the soldiers were receiving, saying it was part of the standard procedures to ensure serving officers who fall sick or get injured receive adequate medical care.

“The patients we have visited today are doing very well; even though they were serious cases, they’re now stable. We are grateful for the leadership to always come to visit our soldiers when they’re admitted in hospital because this is very important for their morale.” said Dr. Moreira
