UN Security Council Resolution 2628 (2022), mandates the African Union to put in place the necessary structures for command and control of the mission and ensure operational coordination between its contingents, in addition to coordinating operational decision making under a Force Commander and Sector Commanders, among others.
As per the AU-PSC communique issued on 8 March 2022, ATMIS will be led by a Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, to whom each component – military, police and civilian shall report separately. The Force Commander will come from the largest Troop Contributing Country (TCC) and he/she will have a clear command and control over all the forces of the mission.
