AU Special Representative for Somalia visits ATMIS soldiers undergoing treatment in Nairobi

Nairobi, 19 December 2022 – The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia and head of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, today visited ATMIS military personnel, admitted to various hospitals in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

The Monday visit by Ambassador Souef, is his first since he officially assumed office in November, and is part of the periodic quarterly visits, to check on the health condition and recovery of ATMIS peacekeepers, receiving specialized treatment in the health facilities.

During the visit, Ambassador Souef lauded the soldiers for their bravery, sacrifice, and commitment to the mission mandate in the overall effort to restore peace and stability to Somalia.

“I thank the soldiers for their contribution and support as well as their families who are supporting them remotely. I assure them and their families that the mission will never let them down,” said Amb. Souef who wished them a quick recovery.

Ambassador Souef who held discussions with the senior management teams of the facilities, was updated on the progress of the injured personnel. He expressed satisfaction with the quality of treatment they are receiving.

The visit by the ATMIS top leadership is also to boost the morale of the injured troops. “It quickens the healing process and they feel appreciated by their bosses. This is something that should continue,” said Col. Dr. Benard Gichina Mukuria, the ATMIS Military Welfare Liaison Officer.

ATMIS personnel from the various Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) who suffer from various ailments and injuries sustained in combat, are usually evacuated to various level three hospitals in Nairobi for specialized treatment.
